SWINDON swimmer Grant Turner’s Olympic dream may not be over just yet despite missing out on a place in the final of the 4x100m freestyle relay.

A sluggish start from Simon Burnett meant Great Britain faced an uphill task in their bid to make the final, but Turner swam the stand-out leg of the race to haul his side back into contention before they eventually finished sixth in their heat and 12th overall.

But with the medley relay team yet to be decided ahead of the event which begins on Friday morning, Turner believes he has put himself in a good position to be selected for the freestyle leg following his impressive display at the Aquatics Centre.

“Hopefully my performance has put me in a good position to make the medley relay team, but that is down to British Swimming now,” he said.

“It would be amazing to get another chance to swim at the Olympics so I will have to wait and see, but I will stay with the team and continue to train hard, stay fresh, and carry on eating the right things.

“If I am given the nod for the race it would be an amazing feeling, and I would be ready to give my best again.”

A major talking point at the end of the race was Britain’s decision to leave out top performer Adam Brown from the heats, but Turner was not sure how much of an impact it made.

“A lot of people have been talking about whether or not the right people swam, but at the end of the day it was a decision made by the team,” he said.

“We have to respect that decision and get on with it, and that is what we did, because it is something that could have been talked about until the cows come home.

“We were all good enough to be at the Olympics, but a couple of guys were not at their best on the day.

“Every swimmer has days like that when they do not perform as well as they can, and unfortunately for us it was like that this time.

“I was really pleased with the way I swam, though, but it was always going to be hard for us to get through to the final.”
