CLAYTON and Lucinda Fredericks expressed their satisfaction with both their team and individual positions as the Little Cheverell-based couple both claimed top 10 places as the dressage phases of the Olympic eventing concluded at Greenwich Park today.

The Wiltshire duo helped their country into second place in the team competition as Lucinda and Flying Finish finished the discpline tied seventh, while Clayton was just behind in 10th on Bendigo.

Australia lie just behind gold medal favourites Germany going into the cross-country phase of the competition tomorrow and Clayton said: "The good omen is we were in the reserve position with the Germans in Hong Kong (Beijing Olympics).

"The Aussies led the dressage and ended up with the silver - let’s hope this time with them leading after the dressage they end up with the silver and we end up with the gold.''

The pair are also in good shape in the individual competition, which is led by Germany-based Japanese rider Yoshiaki Oiwa on a score of 38.10.

Italian Stefano Brecciaroli is second and 56-year-old New Zealander Mark Todd, who is chasing his third Olympic title, lies one place behind.

“Tomorrow is a tough test in terms of its twists and turns and I’m really going to be cracking on there,'' said Lucinda.

"In some ways having made that one mistake in the dressage test today I’m probably better riding when I’ve got a bit of fire in me – it’s a different sort of pressure to that of when you’re leading.''
