WINSLEY fencer Sophie Williams’ dream comes true today when she represents Great Britain in the women’s individual sabre event at London 2012.
The 22-year-old’s selection fore the Games, ahead of higher-ranked compatriots, caused controversy earlier this summer, but the Truro-based competitor is hoping to lay down a marker for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
She was drawn to face Italian Irene Vecchi, who helped her country to team gold at the 2011 European Championships and is ranked sixth in the world, in the opening last 32 stage.
“We’re all very aware that it’s fantastic to be selected but we’ve also got a job to do and we’re still focussed on that very much,” she said.
