IT was a fantastic team performance at Chesham and we showed the strength in depth we’ve got in the squad now.
People will always remember the big games like that and Eastleigh but sometimes it’s the games where we’ve had to dig deep and win ugly to get a result that are just as important.
We’ve had times where we’ve not had a bench to change things and we’ve had to grind results out to survive.
We made the decision to blood the youngsters in the Wiltshire Shield on Tuesday night and I have to thank Dave Ferris (U18 manager) for letting a load of his players be involved.
We knew that they would fade physically as the game went on but for 45 minutes, they matched Supermarine.
It just highlighted the gulf between U18s football and the Southern Premier Division and I’m not thinking about the result.
Some of those players will go on to play at Western League level, grow a bit more and then become good Southern League players in a few years, like people like Chris Snoddy, Luke Gullick, Scott Lye, Alan Griffin and James Guthrie have done.
The goal scored by Ben Wickens was a beauty too and I thought he worked his socks off.
We’ve got a huge game at Weymouth this weekend and I know that they’re in a very good run of form.
But we are too and there’s no reason why we can’t go there and put in a performance to get us into the next round of the FA Trophy.
They’re expecting a four-figure crowd and it has the ingredients to be an exciting game.
I’m sad to see that John Applegate will be stepping down as chairman and I think that it’s a similar position to the manager because you’re in the firing line in the same way.
He’s been a close conifdante and we’ve dealt with tough off-field issues together – I think that it’s disappointing news.
