Marlborough and District Junior Athletics smashed a clutch of records in their final Wessex league match of the season.

The star of the show at Bournemouth on Sunday was Brad Hill, 14, who became the fastest in the country in his age group when he ran his 80m hurdles race in 11.3secs, breaking the club and league record.

He has hurdled competitively only a handful of times.

Hill’s club record was one of seven to fall during the event, which saw MADJA come first out of the seven teams, with 598 points, ahead of Basingstoke and Mid Hants (543.5 points) and Camberley (405.5).

The win put MADJA seventh out of 19 in final table ahead of clubs from much bigger towns including Basingstoke, Slough and Portsmouth.

Other athletes who broke club records were Luke Callaghan (U15 400m and 1500m), Josh Eades (U20 100m and 200m), Chris Claydon (U20 discus) and the U15 4x100m team of Matthew Williams, Callaghan, Joe Williamson and Hill.

MADJA’s main successes came in the U13 and U15 boys’ teams, who both finished second overall in the league.

In Sunday’s match, U13 Peter Booten came first in the javelin with a throw of 33.03m and second in both the 200m (28.6secs) and long jump (4.54m).

Henry Williams won the shot and the discus, with throws of 8.26m and 25.05m respectively.

Williams and Booten combined with Alex Davies and Jamie Cooper to win the 4x100m relay. Williams’ brother Matthew was second in the U15 high jump, clearing 1.65m.

In the U13 girls’ competition, Eve Tarring was first in the 70m hurdles in a time of 12.9secs, helping MADJA to a tally of seven wins out of the day’s 12 hurdles races. Gemma Shepherd was narrowly beaten into second in the U13 800m in 2:32.0.

In the U15 girls, Amy Cooper emerged with a trio of seconds.

She was runner-up in the 300m (46.2secs), 1500m (5:07.5) and 75m hurdles (12.9secs). Georgina Cooper came second in the shot (8.29m) and Lydia Borwell second in the javelin (21.08m).

Morgan Gascoigne picked up a double first in the U17 competition, in the 200m (27.2secs) and the long jump (5.01m), while Emily Humphries won in the 80m hurdles (13.7secs) and Rachel Sykes won the shot put with a throw of 7.03m.

In the parallel QuadKids event for athletes under 11, seven boys and four girls from MADJA competed, with Jacob Smith and Harriet Hanscomb-Davies the pick.

MADJA chairman Richard Cooper said of the season: “The standard has been very high this season.

“As a small town club, we punch well above our weight, and have some of the best athletes in the league.”

While the club’s league season is over, MADJA have one final fixture – an inter-club competition on Sunday September 5.
