JAZ Carlin has vowed to succeed where Olympic medalists Rebecca Adlington and Jo Jackson failed next month and prove she can trump the pair come London 2012 qualification, writes BEN BAKER.

The 19-year-old from Wootton Bassett will join Adlington and Jackson at the European Championships in Budapest at the start of August, but Carlin knows at London 2012 it will be only two Brits swimming in each Olympic discipline.

Carlin was given a watching brief at last year’s World Championships in Rome, where despite climbing the podium both Adlington and Jackson were upstaged by Italian Federica Pellegrini.

The Olympic 200m freestyle champion added world gold to her collection and repeated the trick in the 400m with Jackson this time taking silver and Adlington scooping bronze.

Pellegrini smashed new world records in both and despite facing an unenviable task, Carlin is adamant she can more than rival the Italian at the Europeans in Budapest and lay down an early Olympic marker.

“I am getting quite excited about the European Championships now because I will have the chance to race against the world record holder of both the 200m and 400m freestyles in Federica,” said Carlin, who will also swim for Wales at October’s Commonwealth Games.

“There is no point shying away from a challenge like this because if you have aspirations of being the best then you need to face the best.

“Everything I do is definitely with the London Olympics in mind and coming up against Federica will be a great experience and test for me.

“This year is an exciting year with the Europeans and the Commonwealths but it is nothing compared to what 2012 will be like.

“It is always an honour to represent Great Britain and doing it at 2012 would be a huge honour and one that I have been thinking about for a long time.”
