SUE COOKE begins her bid this weekend at North Wilts Bowls Club to win three Wiltshire Women’s County Titles, writes DAVE EATON.
A member of the highly successful ladies section of the Box Club she will be competing in the national fours, triples and four-wood singles events.
The first two disciplines will be played at North Wilts this coming Saturday, July 24, with the four-wood singles taking place next Tuesday evening, July 27, at the same venue.
An appearance in the county finals has also gained Cooke automatic qualification to represent Wiltshire in these three competitions at the English Women’s Finals to be held at Royal Leamington Spa from July 31 for a fortnight.
A losing finalist in the county fours last year beaten by another quartet from Box skipped by Carol Grenfell, Cooke will be hoping with the same players as last year to turn the tables this time around and get her hat-trick bid off to a winning start.
Together with Janet Hardie and Alex Jacobs they will be defending their triples crown against Wilton. In the four-wood singles Cooke will be making her first appearance in this final as will her opponent Winsley’s Sandra Bartlett.
The Box club supply the two finalists in the ladies two-wood singles in Janet Hardie and Carol Grenfell.
The latter has tasted national success indoors while the vastly experience Hardie is a national winner both indoors and outdoors including the two-wood singles. Hardie’s last national success came in the 55s and Over Singles in 2008.
An additional event on the finals day calendar this year is the Under 25s Singles which will feature Avon’s Lauren Williams and Wootton Bassett’s Charlotte (Charlie) Harding.
The county women’s finals will be played over two days as Cooke is involved in three finals – the same applied last year as Janet Hardie was involved in three finals.
