Chippenham Town's first home friendly of the closed season ended in a 3-0 loss to Newport County on Tuesday night.
Adie Mings fielded a strong line-up that featured new-boys Mike Perrott and Ashley Edenborough on the wings and Ashley Williams donning the captain's armband against his former club.
However, the Bluebirds' Conference National opponents proved too strong on the night and they took the lead on 23 minutes when striker Robbie Matthews rose highest from a corner and angled a header past Ian Gill in the Chippenham goal.
With 41 minutes on the clock, last season's runaway Conference South champions doubled their lead when a Matthews header found strike partner Craig Frater in the box.
Shaun Lamb challenged the triallist but the ball sat up for Frater, who fired an acrobatic volley into the side netting.
Early in the second-half, Chippenham had a chance from the penalty spot when Edenborough was brought down by a sliding challenge from Newport's Sam Foley.
Lewis Powell stepped up to take the kick but substitue keeper Glyn Garner was equal to it, producing a smart save in his debut for the Welsh outfit.
Newport grabbed a third in the 61st minute when Foley's low shot from the edge of the area cannoned into the net off defender Steve Casey.
Chippenham Town: Ian Gill (Chris Snoddy 45), Luke Gullick, Shaun Lamb, Ashley Williams (Iain Harvey 45), Steve Casey, Greg Tindle (Nathan Rudge 45), Scott Lye, Ashley Edenborough, Lewis Powell (Shaun Benison 66), Alan Griffin (Sammy Duggan 74), Mike Perrott (Sam Allison 66).
