NEW Calne captain Dan Knight insists his side have the talent to fight off relegation from the Wiltshire Division this season.

Knight has taken over from former skipper Chris Downham and watched his struggling side lose by 103 runs at Marlborough.

“It’s all about survival this season and I still believe that with the players we’ve got, we can do that,” said captain Knight.

“It’s important that we stay up because we’ll be moving to the new ground (Beversbrook) next year.

“The players’ availability hasn’t always been great and we’ve had to use a lot of second team players in a lot of the games we’ve had.

“But fingers crossed that we’ll have a lot more first teamers available from now on and that’ll help us – I’m quite confident that we’ll be able to achieve our objective of staying up.”

In the weekend’s clash, Marlborough won the toss and chose to bat first, with John Carroll hitting 76.

Skipper Ben Head added 69 while Charlie Langton also made 59.

Courtney Earl and Glen Robinson took two wickets each but the hosts finished on 287-7.

Robinson also top-scored with the bat for Calne with 40 but the Marlborough bowlers stifled the visitors’ run-chase.

George Fox claimed four wickets while Carroll and Will Langton took a further two each, as Knight’s men were skittled for 184 in the 45th over.
