With what should have been the match of the day in the Premier Division between defending champions Corsham Centre and their fierce local rivals Box Rovers being postponed due to the Centre being unable to raise a side.

Questions will now be asked if the Centre’s days as the number one side in the league are numbered. It is too early to answer that question but one thing is for certain and that is they need to sign on a few more players before next weeks trip to Potterne otherwise they may have to postpone for a second successive weekend.

Cooper Avon 1, Potterne A 2

New promoted Cooper Avon hosted Potterne A at the Conigre in what turned out to be a very competitive match that the visitors edged with a 2-1 victory that saw them upset the odds.

Cooper who had turned the Conigre into the home of football fell behind to a goal from Potterne’s debutant Ali Jaffari.

Cooper leveled through Dave Macey but a second before the half time interval from Jaffari was good enough to earn Potterne an unexpected win.

Cooper also lost at the same stage of proceedings in the previous campaign but bounced back to claim the division one title in fine style so manager Gary Newman will see the defeat as a blip rather than a massive setback to his teams title aspirations.

Dog & Fox Ashley 5, Semington Rovers 2

Bradford based Dog & Fox Ashley continued their run of good form against Semington Rovers as they followed up their two victories from last season with another convincing win after running out 5-2 victors.

A goal apiece from Dan Fowler who scored an excellent free kick and Dave Appleyard who drilled home a fierce volley from the edge of the area gave the Dog a two-nil interval lead before Semington staged what proved to be a short lived fight back when a two goal burst from Kelvin Lockwood who had played in defence in the first half got Semington back on level terms, the first of which came from the penalty spot after Matt Russell had been bundled over.

Semington were all square for just a few minutes before Dan Fowler regained the lead for the Dog with a screamer from 40 yards out. Further goals from Appleyard and Liam Richards who scored another brilliant goal earned the Dog their win.

Holt 0, Biddestone Social 9

Biddestone Social who have finished runners up to Corsham Centre in three of the last four seasons will be hoping to claim the gold medal this season and they got of to a flyer courtesy of their thumping 9-0 victory away at Holt who were always second best to a Biddestone who were in dominant form from the first whistle.

Bristol may boast to have the artist Banksy on their doorstep, but Biddestone have their own Banksy in goal machine Gary Banks who knows the art of scoring goals and it was his hat trick that did most of the damage after Rob Pocock had given Biddy the lead. Former Centre player Dan King netted twice, Steve Healy and two blistering long rage strikes from Ed Drury and Warren Newbury made up the winners nine-goal tally.

Maud Heath Sports 5, Winsley 2

Maud Heath Sports new manager Dave Beal got of to a winning start in his first game in charge since replacing Andy Townsend as the man in charge of the Calne based outfit.

Winsley traveled to their opponents hoping to end their three match losing run against their host but like the other three outing this game ended in defeat as Maud Heath defeated their guests 5-2.

Winsley had the bare eleven for their trip to Maud Heath but had many chances to score but found the hosts keeper Jodi Whiston in great form as he kept Winsley at bay and only conceded after his side had taken a five-nil lead thanks to a goal each from Darren Holcombe, Ali Duncan and a hat trick from Stuart Windsor. Chris Foley and Shaun James were on target for the losers

The Gladstone Arms 4, Westbury Rangers A 3

Chippenham based The Gladstone Arms (formerly White Hart Combe) began life in the top flight with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Westbury Rangers A in a game that was action packed from the first minute.

With influential midfielder Craig Fullam failing a fitness test and keeper Liam Bell away on honeymoon, which resulted in talented winger Chris Cox going in goal things didn't look promising for Gladstone.

Gladstone Arms took the game to Westbury and should have been three of four up but missed chances from James Stone, Aaron Merryweather and Lee Fernandez saw them wait before they finally broke the deadlock when Sean Rushmore scored from the penalty spot after Fernandez had scored from a free kick which had been ruled out for a foul and led to the resulting spot kick.

Westbury were back on level terms before the break when Marc Lanfear scored the first of his three goals. Gladstone Arms regained the lead thanks to Fernandez who chipped both the last defender and the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

The second half saw both teams create many chances and it was Westbury who scored next with Lanfear tying the scores for a second time, but like the first half it wasn’t long before Gladstone reclaimed the lead again. After a great move Aaron Merryweather scored from a tight angle for 3-2.

Lanfear drew Rangers level for a third time and should have taken the lead on 80 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, Matty Smith stepped up to take the spot kick which was turned onto the post by stand in keeper Chris Cox to the delight of his team mates. This seemed to spur on The Gladstone and with five minutes left Sean Rushmore crossed for Aaron Merryweather to tap home the winner.

The game was played in good spirit by both teams and was a good advert for Sunday football.
