WOOTTON Bassett's first taste of South West One East rugby proved a tough baptism.

The game started well for the Wiltshire side as they got their hands on the restart and went about making inroads into the home side's half.

But events turned quickly as Bassett started neglecting their defensive duties and, within the space of 15 minutes, Bucks had stormed into a 22-0 lead thanks to three tries and a penalty.

Despite this damaging spell Bassett came back at the home side and some clinical handling and running from depth led to an unconverted try in the corner for full-back David Hogg.

Bassett had another scoring chance however it was deemed there was a forward pass to winger Grant Murdoch whose try was disallowed and the teams turned around at 22-5.

Bassett endured another poor 15-minute period as Bucks ran in another two tries to increase the lead to 36-5 at the start of the second half.

But powerful running and good off-loading saw back row Dave Williams power for another try.

Bucks still had more in the tank though, another two tries completing their triumph.

Bassett host Cheltenham on Saturday.
