The League welcomed three new sides to Division Four and all of them were scheduled to be in action on the opening day.

But due to X Change FC being unable to raise a side it meant that Witham Friary missed out, but both of the league’s other debutants, Potterne B and FC Boroughs stated with a win

Malmesbury based FC Boroughs beat Audley Spartans 5-2 and it was former Sherston Town hit man Anthony Vizzard who made all the difference, Vizzard scored two of the five goals with Chris Andrews, James Brown and Adam Lane sharing the others.

Audley played their part in what was a good game but came up just short, they were denied by the woodwork twice and missed a couple of clear cut chances before and after Gavin Freegard scored both of their goals from the penalty spot.

Gladstone Rovers 1, Chippenham West End 0

Chippenham based rivals Gladstone Rovers (formerly Old Road Tavern) and Chippenham West End went head to head in a thrilling opener to their season and in the end it was Robbie Burton’s first half effort that separated the teams and gave Gladstone bragging rights until the team meet again later in the season.

The West End were caught cold as they took a while to get going in which time the conceded but had it not been for a couple of goal line clearance’s from Chris Wallace, Gladstone’s winning margin would have been more convincing.

Lavington (Sunday) 6, AFC Lyneham 0

Lavington (Sunday) are the early leaders of the division by virtue of the 6-0 win over AFC Lyneham who look as if they will be facing another season of heartache.

Myles Hickton gave Lavington the perfect start, James Cullip made it 2-0 before Hickton netted two more to complete a quick fire treble, Chris Smith added number five and a fourth from Hickton took the half time score to 6-0 but that is where the scoring ended as Lyneham tightened up their defence to deny Lavington further second half goals.

Mash Tun Villa 2, Somerford FC 1

A change of name from Westbridge Re-United to Mash Tun Villa saw them begin life at Trowbridge Town’s Woodmarsh ground with a 2-1 win over Somerford FC who found Villa’s keeper Richard Hunt in outstanding form as he kept out almost everything that Somerford sent his way.

Goals from Shaun Bennett and Dale Rowland who netted direct from a corner gave Villa a 2-0 half time advantage. Luke Radcliffe pulled a goal back for the villagers but it was a case of too little too late as a Hunt inspired Villa held out for an opening day win.

Potterne B 5, Corsham Park Rangers 1

Potterne B may be new to the league but they began with a comfortable 5-1 win at home to relegated Corsham Park Rangers who were no match for Pete Huntley’s young chargers.

Potterne took the lead through Glyn Rowles in the opening few minutes only for Corsham Park to get back on level terms soon after when James Parsons helped a goal bound Kadir Ayhaw effort over the line. A second from Rose restored Potterne’s lead on 10 minutes.

Potterne made it 3-1 on 40 minutes thanks to a stunning 30 yard strike from Geoff Potter that dipped over the Corsham Park keeper, on the stroke of half time Steve House made it 4-1.

Corsham Park showed some fighting spirit in the second half and should have narrow the gap in the 65 minute after James Parsons was fouled in the area but Jake Marshall fired the penalty against the bar and five minutes later Josh Sheppard sealed Potterne’s win when he rounded a Corsham Park defender to fire home a cool finish for 5-1.

Witham Friary p, X Change FC p

Witham Friary who have been one of the most successful sides in the Frome & District Sunday league for a long time will hope that things will only improve as the seasons gets going. Manager Richard Gould fancied a new challenge so his team have crossed the Somerset border to take on what Wiltshire have to offer but he will have been left frustrated by his opening day opponents X Change FC who despite having 21 players signed on were unable to put together a side to play.

X Change may come to regret their decision to postpone the game as Witham were struggling themselves with four players out through suspension and a number away on holiday leaving them with a much weaker squad than they would usually have so it would have been a good time to play one of the title favourites.
