AFTER a painstaking four-year wait for approval, Basset Down Golf Course will officially turn on its brand new floodlighting system on its driving range next Wednesday (September 9), writes SAM MORSHEAD.

The lights, which employ a 'Berm Lighting System', throw pools of light up and out from shells set into the ground to minimise troubles for neighbours of the course, which is near Wroughton.

Basset Down is the first course in the region to use the system, which was meticulously installed by illumination experts Abacus.

The same company were recently charged with the lighting of the Nad Al Sheba Golf Course in Dubai - home to the world's wealthiest golf tournament.

Basset Down PGA professional, Michael Walters, said: "The lights will bring a new dimension to our range facility, allowing practice after work and during the darker months."

Basset Down has also recently invested in range heaters and automated tee mats.

Owner Juliette Nutland added: "The new lights give a wider opportunity for golfing enthusiast of all ages to enjoy the Basset Down experience.

"We are committed to providing the most modern and interactive golfing facility that we can for our customers."

To celebrate the official switch-on, Basset Down has organised a series of events, in aid of the Prospect Hospice, starting on Wednesday with a special juniors' evening on the range during which the floodlights will be turned on for the general public for the first time.

A day later (September 10), the course hosts a nine-hole team tournament, with prizes on offer for the winners while on the Friday the club's PGA Pros invite all comers to an Open Activity Evening under the lights on the range.
