Corsham Centre may have been crowned Premier division champions for the past four seasons, but if they are to claim a fifth successive top flight title they are going to be at their very best from day one.
The Centre who are usually slow starters begin the defence of their title by hosting fierce rivals Box Rovers who on paper have the players signed on who could see them beat the Centre for the first time in nine attempts.
Rovers are likely to start with Tim Jefferies and Jack Nicholas against their former club and with Jefferies linking up with Tom Smith in front of goal Rovers should improve their goals scored tally this season.
The match should be a close one and may end all square but for once Rovers are tipped to defeat their nemesis and get off to a flyer.
Cooper Avon v Potterne A
New promoted Cooper Avon host Potterne A at the Conigre and this could be one of the matches of the opening day as both teams look as if they have put together a great squad of players for the challenge ahead of them.
Cooper under Gary Newman have been brilliant to come from division four to the top flight in straight seasons, but this game against Potterne will see what they have on offer.
Potterne were the surprise package in the premiership last term when they finished in fourth spot and manager Lee Sanders will be hoping that they were not one season wonders, but their trip to Melksham is likely to see them return home empty handed as the hosts are predicted to claim a comfortable win with newcomer Luke Turvey stealing the headlines for the tyremen.
Dog & Fox Ashley v Semington Rovers
Bradford based Dog & Fox Ashley may have beaten Semington Rovers in both of their meetings last season but they won’t be taking anything for granted when the sides meet at St Laurence School this coming Sunday as Steve Wickings side will be well aware of what happened in November 2008 when a Stuart Barber hat trick helped Semington to win 5-0.
Barber has a good record against the Dog but his opposite number Steve Roddy who scored five of the 10 goals that the Dog netted against Semington last term has a better one but suspension will see Roddy miss the game.
The fixture will probably produce a goal fest and with Rovers, manager Allan Clarke having to take over in goal from Tom Wysocki he could be in for a torrid time as the Dog may just hit the goal trail to run out easy winners.
Holt v Biddestone Social
Biddestone Social who have finished runners up to Corsham Centre in three of the last four season will be hoping that at last they will be the bride rather than the bridesmaid come next May and Dan Lardner’s side should get of to a winning start when they visit Holt.
In their six previous meetings Biddestone have won all six games and have hammered Holt in five of those matches and it would be a massive surprise if the Biddy boys didn’t chalk up another resounding victory over Stuart Faint’s side who are expected to struggle this season and no doubt would have liked a different opening day fixture.
Holt opened against Corsham Centre 12 months earlier and only lost 3-1 so if they can show that fighting spirit then they may have a fighting chance of getting a point from the game but that shouldn’t really happen as Biddestone should return home with maximum points in the bag.
Maud Heath Sports v Winsley
Maud Heath Sports welcome Winsley to the Recreation Ground in Calne and their new manager Dave Beal will be hoping that his number one striker Darren Holcombe is fit and ready for the start of the new campaign.
Winsley finished last season with a flourish and suffered just one lose in seven games which was against Maud Heath who have won their last three encounters against Paul Ranger’s Winsley side.
In those matches Maud Heath have netted eight goals and Holcombe has bagged seven of them so if Holcombe isn’t available the hosts may just struggle.
Maud Heath have yet to sign on their influential goalkeeper of the past decade Jodi Whiston and without the highly rated shot stopper between the posts it should present Winsley with the opportunity to end their three match losing run against Maud Heath.
The Gladstone Arms v Westbury Rangers A
At this stage of proceedings last season Westbury Rangers A suffered a 2-1 defeat against Maud Heath Sports which was followed up with a 3-0 defeat away at newcomers to the top flight Potterne and for Rangers manager Shaun Gardiner he will be hoping that it won’t be a case of de-ja-vu as they kick-off this campaign away at The Gladstone Arms (formerly White Hart Combe) who gained promotion at the end of last season.
Trevor Rawlings side should give a good account of themselves and have it in them to take the spoils from what should be an entertaining contest between two attack minded sides.
Rangers will again look to Marc Lanfear for the goals to fire them to glory while Gladstone will hope that Aaron Merryweather and James Stone will have what it takes to make it in the top flight.
A high scoring draw is a possible outcome but if there is to be a winner the hosts may just nick it.
