Following the recent resignation of Rowde from the league it means that just 11 sides will battle it out for the silverware in Division One this season.
It also means that Chippenham Sports & Social Club will be without a match this coming weekend as they were the team who were due to take on the now defunct club who called it a day after 23 years on the league.
From the five fixtures that remain, the possible match of the day may be the one at Beaversbrook Sports Facility in Calne where Bremhill View Social Club host Atworth United in their first ever league match at the newly built Sports Complex.
Martin Belcher’s Bremhill View side were dominant in their two matches against Atworth last season winning 8-2 and 5-1 and they will go into the game expecting to claim another convincing win.
That may not be the case as Atworth under new manager Phil Strange has a different looking squad this season and with players like Leigh Rowles-Hitchcock, Sean Fordham and Ashley Wheeler at his disposal, Strange hopes that his Atworth side may be the surprise package this season and if they can get the better of a Bremhill View side who are tipped to claim a narrow win then Atworth should be in for a good season.
FC Bradford v AFC Calne
Pete Collier’s FC Bradford have not managed a win on the opening day of the season since the 2004/05 campaign when they beat Old Road Tavern 3-1 and since that win they have fallen to some heavy losses on kick-off day so the newly promoted side to the division will be aiming to put things right and end that unwanted statistic with a victory at home against AFC Calne who have never suffered a defeat on the opening day of the season.
The game has all the makings of being a classic, but following three great summer signings in the Jordan brothers FC Bradford may just have the upper hand and should start life in division one with a win. Calne shouldn’t be written off and should Jason Matthews side get anything from the game it wouldn’t be a surprise.
FC Colerne v Foresters Arms
FC Colerne host Foresters Arms at their Bath Road ground hoping to claim a victory that would see the mend their first home victory since December 2007 when they beat North Star A 5-2.
The last time the teams met was way back in March 2007 when Colerne won 5-1 on their way to claiming promotion to the premier division. Since then the sides have seen a reversal in fortunes with Foresters just missing out on promotion last term they will be bidding to put that right this season and even though they have lost a few of their leading players from the last couple of seasons there are many people who believe they will be there or thereabouts come next May.
The bookmakers will have Foresters as favorites to win this game but for an outside bet put your money on Colerne who may just upset the odds.
Miller Sports v Bradford News
Melksham based Millers Sports who along with Colerne suffered relegation at the end of a dreadful last season open up their account in division one with a match at the Beeches, Shaw against Bradford News who themselves were playing premiership football just a couple of seasons ago.
Bradford defeated Miller in their last league meeting but previous to that it was the Miller boys who had taken the points, but over the years it was the newsmen who held the bragging rights over their rivals.
Both teams could be seen as strugglers this season as they are both struggling for players, but if there is to be a winner on the day it may just be Miller who produce a surprise result to end their 21 match losing run and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Darren Morris didn’t score the winner for Miller against his former club.
Pheasant FC v North Bradley
Chippenham based Pheasant FC who are bidding for a third successive promotion start life in division one after winning the second division title by a country mile with what promises to be a tough opener at home to North Bradley who over the last few seasons have been so unpredictable.
If Bradley travel Yatton Kennell wanting to play football against the favourites for the title then they will stand a good chance of returning home with a share of the spoils, but if they try to kick their way to victory then they will get slaughtered by a Pheasant side who have been on fire over the past few seasons and have played great football to get where they are today.
