The match of the day in Division two is undoubtedly the game featuring newly promoted sides Bromham (Sunday) and Bradford Renegades who as Riverside Renegades last term pipped Bromham to the runners up spot by one point after they defeated their hosts 5-2 in what was Ady Kember’s outfit final game of a fine season.
Bromham would to start he new season by avenging that defeat and seeing as Lance Davis side have seen a few of their star players depart in the close season Bromham should seize their opportunity and get their first points of the season on the board to leave Davis with a massive task of rebuilding his Renegades side.
Should Renegades snatch a win then it be deserved but would also go down as one of the shocks of the day.
AFC Melksham v Biddestone White Horse
Having won the Westernsport Trophies sponsored WG Parr Trophy last term, AFC Melksham were expected to go on and gain promotion to division one, but towards the end of the season the they pressed the self destruct button and won just one of their final six games that left them in fourth spot. Melksham have replaced manager Mickey Hawkes with Garry Pearse and he has seen most of their cup winning side depart for new clubs over the summer months so wit ha home game against Biddestone White Horse on the horizon he will be hoping for great things from his new signings. Both games between the sides were close last season and this one should be no different but on this occasion unlike the last two, Biddestone are favourites to claim the points.
Green Bell v Hullavington
Hullavington have defeated the Green Bell (formerly The Crown Devizes) in their last four meetings and despite a change of name for the hosts when the teams meet at Sands Lane, Rowde the outcome should be the same as it has been in previous years with Matt Wilkins Hullavington side claiming win number five. Hullavington will hope that last terms top scorer Ed Wilkins can get off to a flyer and add to the 100 plus goals that he has scored for the side in just two seasons. If Wilkins is on form then there is no doubt that Hullavington will return home with their first win in what should be a promotion winning season.
North Star A v Audley FC
It could be a case of David verses Goliath at Priestley Grove, Calne where North Star A who have suffered back to back relegations entertain high scoring Audley FC who are among the favourites for a top two placing come next May. North Star have said goodbye to manager Gary Elliott who had been at the helm for many years and guided his side to the WG Parr Trophy in 2006 and promotion to the top flight the following season but since those glory days the Star rather than shining has been dim and now in division two they face another tough season and would want an easier opening fixture than they have got. If Audley can repeat their pre-season form then they should run out easy winners with a four or five goal-winning margin.
Sutton Benger v Christian Malford
Local rivals Sutton Benger and Christian Malford go head to head at Stanley Park, Chippenham and even though Benger won both meetings involving the sides last season this game may se a different outcome with Malford desperate to claim the bragging rights over their near neighbours. Malford have bought in a number of new faces to their line up in the close season and despite not having the best of start’s to their pre-season they look as if things are coming together at last and this game will be a good test for them. The result will probably be another close one with an odd goal separating the sides and with Benger’s Ian Dawkins making his 600th appearance for the club the script is written for him to grab the winning goal.
The Three Crowns United v Pig & Whistle United
Their promises to be an entertaining game at Buckley Barracks, Hullavington where Chippenham based Three Crowns United host Melksham based Pig & Whistle United who are being tipped by many to be the surprise package this season following their capture of a number of players from local side AFC Melksham. Three Crowns came up to division two as third division champions and manager Tony Beasley will want his side to show the same commitment this term that took them to the title in the last one but without goalkeeper Mark Bolton who has moved to Biddestone Social things may be a little harder this season. Pig & Whistle will have to be at their best to beat their hosts but if they are to mount a serious challenge this term they are going to have to get at least a point from the game which will be a result that both teams will be happy with.
