FOR the second time in three years, Wootton Bassett Town were eliminated from the FA Cup by Wessex League side Brockenhurst, writes STUART SMEDLEY.
Any momentum gained from their midweek 6-1 victory over Headington was lost from the outset as Bassett struggled to match their opposition, who ironically were themselves the victims of a 6-1 reverse on Tuesday.
In fact, Dave Turner’s side failed to register a single shot on target - the closest they came to troubling the visitors' goal coming with 12 minutes left as Terry Adams saw his powerful effort deflected wide.
Ben Kneller’s 38th-minute header ultimately settled a disappointing preliminary round tie as Bassett were made to pay for indecision at the back.
Hesitation in dealing with an innocuous clearance gifted the visitors possession deep inside Bassett territory.
A quick switch stretched the defence further, and Dave Wakefield was given too much time on the right wing, delivering an inch-perfect ball which was comfortably met by an unmarked Kneller.
Stewart Thompson had denied the Hampshire side the lead brilliantly on two previous occasions but was helpless to keep the goal out.
He was beaten again minutes later, this time by Fawzi Saadi. However, he was denied by a goal-line clearance.
