Cricket: Corsham 4th came out on top of a close match at Wilcot.

In a match that both sides had chances to win, a telling unbroken 7th wicket partnership of 56 between Salter (48 not out) and Thompson (31 not out) saw Corsham home.

Set a victory target of 187, the visitors started brightly as Gale (25) and Mitchell (32) were severe on some early loose bowling in an opening stand of 63 in 11 overs.

Once Gilbey (4-40) found his length the middle order were then tied down, with Will Lanyon also impressing in a 12-over spell of 2-37.

Wilcot's catching, a strong point so far this season, let them down badly, with six catches going down.

Three of them were in the sitter category, and this profligacy ultimately proved to be their undoing.

Despite these lapses, Wilcot were still hopeful after the visitors lost their sixth wicket with over 50 runs still needed, but intelligent batting from Salter and Thompson saw Corsham cruise to victory.

Earlier, Wilcot's total of 186-8 had been built around three middle order innings after another early collapse had left them reeling at 48-5.

At one stage four wickets fell for just eight runs and the innings had to be rebuilt, first by Abbott (52) who hit some handsome shots, and Gilbey (31) who was the junior partner in their partnership of 79 for the sixth wicket.

Lanyon (32 not out) struck some useful blows in the closing overs to give Wilcot a chance of victory.

That chance was literally to slip through their hands as a frustrating game saw Corsham win with more than three overs to spare.
