Last week, Wiltshire College Chippenham students and staff took part in a football match to promote the role of our new Further Education Sports Co-ordinator.

Greg Tyson’s job is to increase the opportunities that students have to access sporting and physical activities at college.

It will hopefully also involve organising more competitive sport within the college and against other local colleges and schools. There will also be a chance to volunteer and coach in local primary and secondary schools and within the local community.

Luke Neale a student at the college, who is a fully qualified referee, officiated.

The game began with a few initial exchanges of play, both students and staff creating good chances. Predominantly, the first half was categorised by a strong defensive display from both teams, until the Staff took their best chance and scored after fifteen minutes of play with Mike Few slotting home an excellent 30 yard cross from Jonny Saunders.

The second half began with a few positional changes from the student captain, Pepe Petrov. Tactically this worked well and exposed the Staff defence, culminating in a goal for Keiran Sheils: a composed side-footed slot past goalkeeper Ally Colley. The staff struggled to keep up with the work rate of the Students midfield.

A second goal for the students came from a corner, initially headed off the line by Tim Kershaw, the spoils were cleared up by a clever flick from Alex Cox.

With just a minute left of the game Mike Few struck again, the goal being an almost carbon copy of the first with the exception of a header this time. Final Score 2-2.

To settle the game, penalties were opted for immediately; the best of three penalties to decide the trophy and bragging rights.

Staff took first, scoring their opening two penalties, however this was successfully mirrored by the students.

Finally Greg Tyson, Staff Captain, placed the ball to the bottom left corner - only for student goalkeeper Bradley Sykes to correctly guess his choice and make a fine save.

Ally Colley got close to the final student penalty, but it found the net and the Students deservedly took the title.
