Everleigh trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Richard Hughes had a successful start to the 2009 Royal Ascot meeting with a combined three winners today.

The day got off to the best possible start when 10-3 shot Paco Boy, ridden by Collingbourne's Hughes, won the Queen Anne Stakes at 2.30pm in comfortable fashion.

The 3.45pm St James's Palace Stakes did not prove as successful for the duo with the Hughes-ridden Soul City finishing in eighth place while 40/1 shot Pure Poetry fared slightly better in sixth.

The pair returned to winning form in the 4.25pm Conventry Stakes with their second winner of the day. Irish horse Canford Cliffs, a 7-4 favourite, took the lead 11 furlongs from the line and was never in danger of being caught as Hughes barely threatened to use the whip at any point in another surprisingly routine victory. 20-1 Freemont came sixth in the race.

Hughes claimed his third personal victory of the day in the 4.55pm Ascot Stakes Handicap, although this time on the Jane Chapple-Hyam trained American horse Judgethemoment. The hors had started at 8-1 this morning in the betting markets but gained interest from punters throughout the day and was 13-2 by race time.

Swindon jockey George Baker also competed in the final race of the day, on a horse with the same name, but was not able to make it into the top four.

Attention now turns to tomorrow when Hughes will be one of the favourites for the Royal Hint Cup Heritage Handicap aboard Quinmaster and in the Queen Mary Stakes on Hannon-trained Crown.
