Cricket: Rejuvenated Potterne cruised to their fourth win in a row on Saturday and captain Graham Gaiger says it was their most important of the season thus far.

The first team are now on a six-match unbeaten streak, uncluding progression in the National Village Knockout Cup.

Impressively, the side which brushed aside Goatacre on Saturday included six changes from the 11 who defeated Calne a week prior and Gaiger says it shows the club is on the right track.

“We’ve gone from third-bottom to second in four weeks,” he said. “I’m very happy and we play Marlborough on Saturday where we could go top.

“We’ve had a little bit better availability in the past few weeks but had six missing on Saturday which is why it was so pleasing.

“We’ve got good depth and the second team are very strong. Given the number of absentees we had a strong side out but I think that will be my hardest selection of the season.”

Teenage bowling duo Jake Roberts and Ben Mason were given the new ball by Gaiger and repaid his faith with a tight spell which reduced Goatacre to 22-3.

Jif Wilkins and Kevin Iles, who blasted a century the previous week, provided resistance but neither were able to make a telling contribution.

Veteran seamer Rikki Jackson continued his impressive run to remove both dangermen before finishing with 4-27.

“He seems to do it every week,” laughed Gaiger.

“Neil Doran keeps a lid on the batsmen and he takes the wickets.”

Mark Colyer and Paul Clark batted patiently for Potterne in reply but it was 17-year-old Neil Clark who lit up the innings with a brisk 63 to set up victory for the home side.

“I said to them at tea that if one of them made 50 then we’d win the game,” said Gaiger.

“Goatacre’s opening bowlers are very good but we knew they wouldn’t be able to bowl all day.

“Mark and Paul batted well to see them off before Neil made his score at over a run a ball. It’s very pleasing to win when not at our full strength.” Potterne also play Stalbridge in the cup on Sunday.
