Cricket: Biddestone coach Ron Needham hailed the club’s new captaincy duo after they inspired a record-breaking victory on Saturday.

South African-born skipper Dwaine Perry, along with his second-in-command Jamie Mitchell, put on 217 for the second wicket as the first team set a new best score for a 50 over game.

The vice-captain then took two wickets in reply as Marshfield subsided in the damp conditions to a miserable 90 all out.

“As the scores reflect, they batted beautifully,” said Needham.

“It’s great for the team as well. They’ve just been appointed captain and vice captain so it’s good for the other players to see them lead by example.

“Jamie has played very good cricket up in Yorkshire, has a good knowledge of the game and is very helpful to the younger players.

“Dwaine has certainly made a good start to as captain and he’s enjoying it as well. Plus he’s getting great support from the rest of the team.”

Remarkably, Biddestone were put into bat by the visitors and soon lost opener Martin Sawyer for just seven.

The teenager’s fall brought Perry (116) to the crease for his game-changing partnership with Mitchell (128).

The eventual score of 305 was a new best for the Biddestone first team, eclipsing the previous of record of 286.

In reply, the visitors’ slim chances of an upset were hit early on when Naeem Khan removed star all-rounder Wayne Pascall with the second ball of the innings.

With Marshfield floundering at 63-4, spinner Mark Unwin began an impressive spell where he took 4-21 in under nine overs to mop up the lower-middle order and complete a thumping victory over their close rivals.

“We rate Marshfield as a good batting side but we had a good start with a quick wicket for the second time in two weeks,” said Needham.

“Any win against Marshfield is a good win as they beat us last season.”

Biddestone are now top of the Glos/Wilts Division with four wins out of six games and host third-placed Swindon on Saturday.

“We won’t talk about winning the league,” insisted Needham.

“It’s a horrible thing to say but we’ll take each game as it comes and work hard in the nets and make sure we give ourselves a chance in every game.

“We’ll need to take our current form into the Swindon game though as they also made 300 plus on Saturday.”
