Swindon Town fell to the bottom of the fourth tier for the first time in the club’s history as they were annihilated 4-0 by Colchester United.
A corner which went in off Harry Smith gave Colchester the advantage before Samson Tovide scored twice before setting one up for Jack Payne.
So, how did the players fare as individuals at The JobServe Community Stadium?
GK: Jack Bycroft – 3
Bycroft did actually make a few solid saves in this game to prevent this night from becoming historic for even more reasons. But there is still an air of trepidation when balls come into the box.
RCB: Grant Hall – 1
Owura Edwards had him on toast whenever they came close and he couldn’t live with Samson Tovide either. It was worrying to see how easy it was for Colchester on the counter.
CB: Will Wright – 1
Tovide also had his way with Wright as Swindon put in a defensive display which might have gone done well at the Hammersmith Apollo but certainly not The JobServe Community Stadium.
LCB: Ryan Delaney – 1
What was that for the second goal? The frustration of conceding from yet another corner was still washing over everyone as two attackers were allowed clean through. You just despair when even the experienced players make the rookie errors.
RWB: Tunmise Sobowale – 1
There were a few moments early on when he bailed Swindon out on the counter with his pace but then Edwards worked him out and none of that mattered. It simply can’t be that easy for someone to walk the length of the pitch and put it on a plate.
CM: Gavin Kilkenny – 3
Kilkenny put in a shift trying to make up for the space all around him. He was not able to make anything happen in a positive way but he reduced the rampant nonsense that was going on.
CM: Joel Cotterill – 4
Plagued with the same numerical disadvantage in the middle as Kilkenny, he was tasked with a lot of chasing. I think every moment of quality on the ball from Swindon, which was probably like two or three, came from Cotterill.
LWB: George Cox – 2
Cox also showed some gumption to work up and down and get the ball in the middle but was distinctly lacking in quality when he did so.
ST: Kabongo Tshimanga – 1
He simply didn’t do anything.
ST: Harry Smith – 1
He scored an own goal and did nothing else.
ST: Aaron Drinan – 3
Drinan was also one of those who looked a bit more interested and showed a degree of fight. He had a few attempts but it was very much the prettiest pig at the Harvest Moon Ball.
Substitutes:
Paul Glatzel – 1
He looks very short on confidence right now. Nothing bounced right for him and although he put himself about it was for nought.
Joel McGregor – 4
McGregor did nothing wrong after coming on and stopped the problem of consistent attacks down the side.
Harrison Minturn – 2
The ball getting stuck under his feet at the end was mind-bottling to gift Colchester another big chance when they really didn’t need the help.
Rosaire Longelo – 3
Longelo made a few reasonable runs down the side but ultimately he was not able to create anything at the end of them.
Nnamdi Ofoborh – 3
He put himself about and won some physical duels, Roy Keane would have been proud, but this wasn’t a football match when he came on, more an exercise in mercy.
