Swindon Town boss Ian Holloway discussed the reintroduction of his trademark run he has implemented during his long-lasting managerial career.
Despite taking charge of the Robins on the 25th of October, he has not had his chance to implement this into training due to the fixture schedule.
The experienced manager has taken charge of four games, with there being an equal split between the amount of ones that have taken place on Saturdays and Tuesdays.
The initial date for this run is set for Tuesday 12 November, so he can test his players fitness.
He admitted: “I still don’t know how well they can run and I can’t do my run.
“There’s this specific run I do, I’ve done it for years, I was good at it but all my players had to be good at it or else I won’t pick them.
“So, I don’t know where they are yet and they can’t do it yet or they’ll be exhausted.
“I need to know where they are and I’ll see all the young lads do it as well, so we’ll see.”
The 61-year-old manager has a history of pre-season routines, with a steep hill near a specific hotel in Portugal being the most memorable for his former players.
It gave former Queens Park Rangers defender Nedum Onuoha ‘nightmares’ as he made them do a long run in the scorching heat on a steep hill by the Cascade Wellness and Lifestyle Resort in Lagos, Portugal.
“When we were at QPR, he made it the hardest he’s ever made it. You’re supposed to do it in three sections, but he made us do the whole thing,” he told BBC Sport in an interview.
Holloway said: “It’s not for the faint hearted, I can assure you.
“If people wanna know what it is, it’s 20 yards, 40 yards, 60 yards, 80 yards, 100 yards, 80, 60, 40, 20, it’s an aerobic and anaerobic.
“It tells me who’s got heart, who wants to win, who gives in, who doesn’t, and if you don’t get a certain time, you never play for me.
“Because I’d be a much better player now with my brain than I was when I had legs to run, but if you saw me, it’d be boring, because I can’t get anywhere.”
Bobby Zamora was another former player who trained under Holloway but this time it was at Bristol Rovers where he experienced another pre-season fitness drill.
The former Brighton striker recalled the memorable drill to football podcast Under The Cosh.
He said: “It was three miles along a train track, three miles to this gate, touch the gate and then run back.
“He [Holloway] said ‘If I catch you, you’re doing double sessions!
“Frankie Bennett, the heat has got to him and he’s starting to zig-zag, All of a sudden, he starts to slow down, bang, collapses into a bush.
“So Frank is on the floor, Holloway’s come running past: ‘Double sessions for you!’
“Holloway put the fear of god in everyone in pre-season."
