Swindon Town's Sean McGurk has found his way into the squad for the first time this season, and is happy to have belief from the manager.

Under Mark Kennedy, the former Leeds United player struggled to find his way into the team despite being fit and injury free as the season progressed.

He impressed new boss Ian Holloway after he came on against Colchester United in the FA Cup and got a goal and an assist on Tuesday against Tottenham Hotspur U21s.

“As soon as he come in, the first thing he basically said was ‘you don’t believe in yourselves, you’re still a very very good team and all that’s missing was the belief, and once you get that, there’s nothing stopping you’.

“Getting that belief off the manager and knowing if you’re on the pitch and things go wrong, as long as you react well or you adapt to the situation, you’re not going to get told off and there’s no consequences in the sense of that.”

The Robins brought in number of experienced players in the summer transfer window and many had them to be in a higher position than 22nd.

With the former Crystal Palace manager being appointed, his job was to turn things around and after two wins in two, he has got off to a perfect start.

“I think the new shape and the new system gives us a new little bit of lease of life and everyone’s enjoying it.

“It’s hard obviously to adapt when you’ve been used to a different shape and things like that, but the lads have done brilliant.”

With three goal contributions in seven starts in the last League Two campaign, it was clear that he could have been the attacking flair Town were missing.

McGurk has played a total of 72 minutes in the league but he has enjoyed working his way back into the squad.

“Every footballer wants to play. No one wants to sit on the bench or not be in the squads and things like that.

“Sometimes that’s football, it happens for whatever reasons, different situations and unfortunately, I’ve been on the end of that the last couple of weeks.

“It’s going to happen to six lads every week because the squad’s so big and touch wood, we all stay fit.

“I’ve come in the last two games and like to think I’ve done okay, so hopefully I’ll just keep going.”
