George Cox said that Swindon Town’s Bristol Street Motors victory in midweek spurred them on to follow that up with another three points against Cheltenham Town.

Having won just one of their first 12 matches across all competitions, Town had made the joint-fourth worst start in the club’s history, winning just eight points from their first ten league matches.

However, Swindon picked up two wins in the space of a week as they won their first cup game since 2021 against Bristol Rovers to keep their hopes of progression alive in the BSM Trophy and then won at Cheltenham for the very first time to move above Michael Flynn’s side in the table.

Following the draw against Harrogate Town last weekend, Aaron Drinan said that he believed just getting one win from anywhere would make a big difference in helping Town out of their early-season rut.

Mark Kennedy then followed that up in the lead-up to Cheltenham, saying that he felt that no matter the competition, getting back-to-back wins would do wonders for their confidence.

He said: “In any walk of life winning games is confidence-boosting, so it doesn’t matter who you are, back-to-back wins are huge.

"I would be happier if they were back-to-back league wins, I didn’t have any disappointment from Tuesday other than I wished it was a league game.

“Winning games breeds confidence and no matter how well you are playing or how well you believe you are playing, not winning certainly doesn’t enhance the confidence.

“Winning becomes a habit and part of your culture, so hopefully we can get that.”

Only four outfield starters remained in the line-up from Harrogate to Bristol Rovers and Cox said that the display those players coming in had put on was pushing the rest of the squad to raise their standards to make sure they kept their place.

The former Fortuna Sittard man added that getting that win gave a lift to the whole camp and that helped them follow it up at The EV Charging Points Stadium.

He said: “I think that the lads on Tuesday were unreal and we needed that lift of getting a win there.

“We were in games and maybe in the final third we haven’t been good enough and we came off the pitch thinking we had done well but it is disappointing for the fans because we are not scoring the goals and maybe we look a bit negative.

“I think that Tuesday was a big lift for the lads and it pushes us boys on the Saturday to keep our places because you see other lads performing and so we need to keep performing.

“The competition in the squad is really good and I love that the lads who are not playing are pushing all of us.

“I think that we have a great squad here with a lot of depth in a lot of positions and you could see that today in the last five or ten minutes with a really experienced back line.”
