Will Wright's opening night screamer for Swindon Town against Chesterfield has been nominated for the Goal of the Month award.

League Two have announced their nominations for the monthly awards for August and it will be no surprise that Wright's goal at the SMH Group Stadium is among the four nominees for goal of the month.

The 27-year-old announced himself on his debut in the game under the Friday night lights as he levelled the scores with a magnificent rocket into the top corner, this was the third successive season he has popped up with a goal or an assist in the first match in games for previous clubs Gillingham and Crawley Town.

Having received a pass from Miguel Freckleton in the centre circle, Wright beat Will Grigg with a feint before marauding straight through the Spireites' midfield and sticking one in the top corner from the edge of the box.

The other nominees for the award see another goal from the opening weekend in Jordan Gibson's cracker for Doncaster Rovers against Accrington Stanley; Charles Vernam's strike on the counter for Grimsby Town against Cheltenham Town; and James Berry's effort for Chesterfield at Crewe Alexandra in their 5-0 win.

Speaking after the game, Wright said of his Chesterfield screamer: “I think we should probably with the chop on the halfway line I think that I am more proud of that, really.

“I have got a thing with the opening day of the season, this is my fourth goal involvement in the last four years.

“So, I just had that feeling tonight that I might get a chance, and I did have one a few minutes before that I dragged wide and then once it opened up again I thought ‘Why not? I’ll have another crack’ and luckily for me, it went in.

“It was nice that it was up that end and I could go and celebrate with the away fans straightaway.

“I am hopeful of scoring a goal like that every week and obviously if it was against them [Crawley Town, his former club], it would be a nice feeling, don’t get me wrong but it is not something that I was thinking about too much.”

Town have had a penchant for goals from range so far this season, having only scored once from inside the box across all competitions, and Gavin Kilkenny and Danny Butterworth having also netted from range.
