The Swindon Town Supporters Trust feel like there has been a “renewed focus” at the club as changes have been made since their open letter.

The Trust penned an open letter to owner Clem Morfuni in May setting out changes they felt the club had to make to change the course that had seen them achieve their worst league finish in the four-tier structure.

Speaking two months on, TrustSTFC Vice Chair James Phipps said that he felt he had seen positive changes within the club since that letter was sent.

He said: “The response I have had from Clem has been ‘I didn’t take the letter personally, I took it as a little kick up the backside that you have got to do better.’ And I think that is what has happened.

“I think that there seems to be a more coherent strategy in terms of the recruitment, the reality is that when Jamie Russell came in you had quite a tail from the previous sporting director with players on longer contracts and this is the summer to see whether that strategy has seen a genuine change in direction.

“It does feel like to me that there has been a renewed focus behind the scenes of the club to try and address some of those issues off the pitch as much as on it.

“You do have to look at these things over a period of time and ultimately it always comes down to action.

“Do I feel like a magic wand has been waved to sort all of those challenges? Definitely not. But it has given a renewed sense of urgency to the stadium redevelopment and in all areas of the club.”

Despite the positive movement in the club to attempt to address the concerns supporters had, Phipps added that the Trust would continue to push the club to continue this momentum.

He said: “I think it is one of those things that it is moving in the right direction; there needs to be that realism from the fans about what can happen quickly but also we need to carry on that pressure to ensure that the momentum doesn’t stop and, if anything, picks up.

“For the Trust, we just want to see the momentum continue and build into the new season.

“We have more regular and structured meetings with the leadership of the club, which is another good thing to have come out of the open letter, and the club has realised that you have to work with the fans and there is that sense of having to raise the game and it has started to do that.

“We hope for a great season and ultimately to address the issues off the pitch of investment in experience and the physical County Ground redevelopment, but that will only come by being successful on the pitch and getting more fans and bigger sponsors, those two things are intrinsically linked.

“Hopefully the footballing side gets off to a good start and we can focus the effort on trying to help everything off the pitch.”
