Royal Wootton Bassett made history with an 83-12 victory over Devizes as they scored 1,000 points in a league season for the first time ever.
Bassett scored yet another bonus point victory and, in the process saw their league points scored tally exceed 1000 points for the first time in their history with two games still to play.
Devizes kicked off and looked determined to have a go. However, Bassett had the first chance when Henry Toomer was held up but there was no score.
Devizes had the advantage in territory early but were failing to penetrate the Bassett defence. In the 12th minute Bassett back row Josh McCafferty broke out of defence, passing to Dylan Higginson who unselfishly fed Joe Pettit who was able to go over in the corner, but the conversion was missed.
Devizes then held out until the twentieth minute when a neat chip from Connor Tomley saw Scott Parry touch down. Again, the conversion was missed but Bassett led 10-0.
Evergreen winger Mark Trowbridge added the next try after he latched onto a kick ahead from Rhys Floyd.
Devizes were still working hard and reduced the deficit to 17-5 with a lineout and drive with the ball then thrown wide.
In the 30th minute, an attacking scrum was fed along the line and Toomer joined outpacing the defence for the bonus point try. Almost immediately Toomer added his second of the match with Floyd converting both to extend the lead to 31-5.
Devizes continued to hang around in the game and scored almost immediately from the restart with a well-worked move that saw their centre pop up for the score and cut Bassett’s lead to 31-12 at the interval.
Devizes had worked hard to keep the score down and hoped a similar effort might be possible in the second period. In fact, Bassett’s superior strength, speed, skill and fitness began to tell.
Bassett added 52 unanswered points in a one-sided half. Bassett’s scores in the half came from Toomer (four) to take his match total to six, another from Trowbridge and efforts from McCafferty, Matt Huggins and Koroinivuku Vereti. Floyd added six further conversions to see the game end 83-12.
The second-half scores saw Bassett create a record point for any season with two league matches to come. Bassett next travel to the Forest of Dean to face fourth-placed Drybrook who are old rivals and a difficult side on their home ground.
