Royal Wootton Bassett scored 11 tries to inflict a record league defeat on Thornbury as they ran out 69-0 victors.
Bassett kicked off against their Bristol opponents who had given them a good match in defeat at their own ground. However, this was to be a very different story.
Bassett immediately went on the attack. After just two minutes the ball was shifted to Thomas “Tucker” Blinkhorn who went over in the corner, Blinkhorn forced his way over the try line again after 17 minutes to make it 12-0.
The next try came from the other winger Henry Toomer who outpaced the defence before switching inside to score under the posts.
Just on the half hour, Bassett opted for the scrum instead of the penalty. The ball was shifted out and Cusack joined the line to dive over for the bonus point try but the conversion drifted wide.
In the 39th minute, a Bassett break saw Sam Baker unleash a trademark bobbling grubber kick. He followed up and won the foot race to the line.
The half moved into added time with Thornbury looking for the whistle, but Bassett did not give it to them as a lovely break from Scott Parry saw the ball shipped. A penalty was awarded at the breakdown to Bassett and quick thinking from Rhys Floyd saw the ball passed to Baker who went over near the corner. The conversion was missed but Bassett led 39-0 at the interval.
In the sixth minute of the second period, a close-range scrum saw the ball fired out. Powerful centre Connor Tomley was able to break the defensive line and score under the posts.
Shortly after a lineout near the Thornbury line saw Parry steer the ball over from the back of the ensuing maul. Thornbury then made a defensive error at a lineout and second-row Josh Rice was able to capitalise. In the 67th minute, Scott Douglas pounced on a Thornbury fumble following a defensive scrum for a quick triple salvo.
Thornbury then had a reasonable spell and held out until near the end. However, Baycroft popped up in the corner to go over for the final unconverted try and a 69-0 victory.
Bassett will be pleased to keep their momentum going as they continue to put up cricket scores in their chase for the league title but are likely to have a much tougher game on the road at Wiltshire rivals Trowbridge next week.
