CHIPPENHAM Town followed the euphoria of a late winner at the weekend with the disappointment of a home defeat on Tuesday night in National League South.
Gary Horgan’s side moved into the top half following yet another late goal on Saturday, Joe Parker nodding powerfully past Dulwich Hamlet goalkeeper Charlie Grainger in the 89th minute to cap off a 2-1 success at the Thornbury Surfacing Stadium.
Reflecting on the success, Horgan spoke to Chippenham Town’s media team. He said: “Any win is a good win.
“We battled a little bit with the condition of the pitch in the first half, and they made it really, really difficult for us.
“But it was great to get the win, we’re really, really pleased. It was nice to grind one out, and we were fully deserving of the three points in the end, I thought.”
Earlier in the game, Caine Bradbury had outrageously curled into the near-post top corner from outside the box, only to see George Porter roll the ball home following a mistake by Will King.
Commenting on the performance of former academy prospect Bradbury, Horgan revealed he was not completely enamoured with the midfielder’s performance prior to the break and considered taking him off.
Horgan said: “If I’m honest, I felt that he was a bit lacklustre, and I needed a bit more energy from him.
“I know he got a knock early on in that game, and we did talk about maybe bringing him off at half-time – we’re glad we didn’t. And then he goes and does something like that, and that puts us on our way.”
Unfortunately for the Bluebirds, they were unable to make it five wins from six in all competitions following a 1-0 loss at home to Slough Town in midweek.
The Rebels made most of the early running, but seldom tested home stopper Will Henry before Ben Harris suffered a serious leg injury and had to be substituted midway through the first half.
Once play resumed, Chippenham unsuccessfully appealed for a penalty when Noah Coppin went down in the area, and the two teams went in at half-time all square.
As the action intensified, Slough scored the winner with 11 minutes remaining. Dan Roberts whipped in a free-kick, and Josh Jackman headed past Henry to seal the win.
Chippenham will hope to return to winning ways on Saturday when they travel to Metropolitan Police in the FA Cup third qualifying round.
