The Devizes 2nd XV clocked up another convincing win last weekend ,on the Chivers ground, beating by Pewsey Vale by the handsome margin of 28 points to eight. They could easily have notched up 50 points if they had been able to sustain, throughout the game , the quality of rugby they had displayed in the first half. A mix of experience and youthful endeavour proved too much for what looked to be a very useful Pewsey XV.
From the kick off Devizes took advantage of a Pewsey dropped ball setting up a series of attacks that culminated in fly half, Leigh Wells, charging down a defensive kick and winning the race to touchdown. Chris Barter converted to give Devizes an early lead, 7-0. Pewsey responded immediately converting a penalty kick after Devizes were caught offside.
Devizes always looked dangerous in possession and from a lineout in the Pewsey 22 the pack drove over for skipper ,Charlie Rudler, to claim the try. Chris Barter made no mistake with conversion and Devizes went clear 14-3.Veteran centre, Paul Dyton, was unfortunate to be yellow carded when he retaliated after being subjected to a dangerously high tackle. He appreciated the IO minute break from the high level of activity! During this time Devizes won possession from a turnover ball , attacked the narrow side giving Connor Hall-Brown the chance to evade the defence and score in the corner. Another well judged conversion by Chris Barter stretched Devizes lead to 21-3.
Just as Paul Dyton returned Devizes conceded another penalty. Pewsey chose to kick for touch, won the lineout but knocked on as they drove towards the Devizes try line. Devizes won the subsequent scrum and Leigh Wells recovered ground with another accurate touch kick. Then Paul Dyton ran out of space just when it looked as if he was about to score.
