Hockey: Wootton Bassett Ladies had mixed fortunes at the weekend, with a defeat and two victories.
The 1st XI faced stiff opposition and lost 1 -2 at home against Plymouth Marjons, who are newly relegated from Premier One. Plymouth started strongly with swift, accurate passes, and scored in the 20th minute. Wootton Bassett strove for greater possession, and were rewarded when Gemma Richards equalised just before half time.
In the second half, the visitors continued to press Wootton Bassett's defence, who held out until ten minutes before the end, when Plymouth scored again. Wootton Bassett retaliated with a fine team effort and were unlucky not to equalise. Players of the Match were Emma Langdon and goalkeeper Gemma Vinton, whose superb saves thwarted Plymouth's promising attacks.
This Saturday, Wootton Bassett 1st XI will play Chippenham 1st XI away, and on Sunday they have a Cup game against Chichester, at home.
Wootton Bassett 2nd XI picked up three valuable points when they defeated Bretforton, at Evesham, 1 - 0. In a keenly contested game, Sue Davies scored the only goal in the first half. Bretforton strove to score but Wootton Bassett maintained their lead impressively to move nearer to the top of the table.
This Saturday they play Hereford 2nd XI at home, 11am.
Wootton Bassett 3rd XI were tested in the first half of their home game against Gloucester 4th XI, who are just below them in the League. Gloucester attacked strongly and were 2 - 1 up at half time, with Abby Iles having scored for Wootton Bassett. The home side's excellent teamwork in the second half yielded goals from Jenny Jones and Abby Iles, to ensure a well-earned 3 - 2 victory which maintained Wootton Bassett's second place in the League. Player of the Match was Teagan Buchanan, This Saturday, Wootton Bassett 3rd XI will play Stroud 2nd XI away.
