Hockey: Wootton Bassett Ladies 1st XI travelled to Cornwall for their furthest-flung fixture, against Falmouth.
The visitors, refreshed after their overnight stay, started strongly and opened the scoring following a series of short corners.
A promising strike by captain Helen Siviter was deflected neatly into goal by Vicky Field. Falmouth retaliated vigorously and equalised before half time.
In the second half, Falmouth's decisive attacks yielded three more goals in quick succession.
Wootton Bassett maintained a spirited offensive despite the absence of subs and they were unlucky not to score again.
Player of the Match was Lisa Turner, and the whole team won praise from the captain for their effort, attitude and persistence.
This week, the 1st XI will play Plymouth, at home, 11.30am.
Wootton Bassett Ladies 2nd XI picked up three points when they defeated Cirencester 1st XI 3-1 at home. Wootton Bassett faced strong opposition from the start of the game, and their efforts to penetrate Cirencester's defence were thwarted until the final minute of the first half, when a pass from Sue Davies was slotted home by Helen Bott.
Wootton Bassett, with a 1 - 0 lead, started the second half confidently, with some slick, short passes. Their determination was fuelled when Cirencester equalised from a deflection, and a short corner pass from Sue Davies was driven home by Sammy Jennings, to make it 2 - 1. Wootton Bassett kept up the pressure and were rewarded with Sammy Jennings' second goal. This followed some excellent teamwork by Sue Davies, Natasha Moore and Becky Thomas, who crossed the ball for Jennings to score.
The victory was well deserved, with some superb saves by Wootton Bassett goalkeeper Gemma Vinton, and fine play by captain Sarah Scarth in defence.
Helen Bott was Player of the Match. This weekend, Wootton Bassett 2nd XI will play Bretforton 2nd XI away.
Wootton Bassett Ladies 3rd XI, in a tough away match against a strong Cirencester side, trailed 3-0 at half time and conceded five more goals in the second half, to lose 8 - 0. Players of the Match were Andrea Haynes, Judith Brown and Kath Smith. This week they will play Gloucester 4th XI at home.
