CHIPPENHAM Town and Spencer Moulton have endured mixed fortunes over the past eight days in the men’s top Wiltshire team competition – the four-rink league play-offs.
Holders Chippenham, who were pipped by Holt for top spot this season in the South section, beat Purton in the quarter-finals 89-65.
However, five days earlier Spencer Moulton (Bradford-on-Avon) crashed to a 94-31 defeat in the quarter-finals by top North side Swindon Westlecot.
Chippenham took the honours on three of the four rinks against Purton, with Steve Heseltine, Kevin Ringham, Mike Travers and Paul Beazer leading the way with a 28-8 victory.
Other wins were recorded by Andy Coles’ quartet 23-16 and captain Jeremy Haselton, who landed two late counts of five to win 20-18.
Will Jones’ rink suffered the only loss, going down 23-18 to Ken Gardiner.
Town led 29-6 after five ends, 40-29 at halfway, 56-46 at 15 and 73-57 at 18 before claiming an 89-65 win.
They will face Westlecot in the semi-finals at the end of the month in a repeat of last year’s semi-final, which Town won 82-80.
Spencer Moulton hit a road block in their quarter-final against Westlecot, losing heavily on all rinks.
Moulton trailed from the outset and were 21-8 down after five ends. The deficit was increased to 53-23 after 10 ends and a halt was called after 15 ends, with Moulton way 94-31 adrift.
The other two quarter-final matches – Royal Wootton Bassett against Salisbury and Holt versus Highworth – will take place this Sunday.
