DEBBIE Shadwell was the only player from this area of the county to complete a double at the Wiltshire women’s finals day at Bradford-on-Avon last Saturday in the five main national events: singles, pairs, triples, fours and two-wood singles.
She was a member of the winning combinations in the national fours and triples championships.
However, the Box player was denied the opportunity of completing a hat-trick of titles as the pairs final in which she had also qualified for alongside Kathryn Yeoman also was put back until domestic finals weekend at Devizes in September.
Shadwell faces a very busy August as she has also reached the nationals as a member of both the county Johns Trophy and Walker Cup squads.
Two other players from this area also contested two finals at Bradford-on-Avon but endured mixed results.
North Wilts’ Ann Roberts-Phare enjoyed success in the two-wood singles final but missed out in the four-wood singles final.
While Royal Wootton Bassett’s Charlotte Daniell lost in both the triples final and junior singles final.
Shadwell, leading for the foursome that also included Jane Taylor, Jean Collier and Michele Williams, were 21-12 winners over Westlecot in the first of Saturday’s finals at Bradford.
After lunch, Shadwell then teamed up alongside Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs in the triples final to beat Yvette Maxwell-Darkes, Maisie and Charlotte Daniell (Royal Wootton Bassett) 24-13.
In the other three finals played at Bradford – the home green of ladies president Ruth Gerrish – Ann Roberts-Phare (North Wilts) won 16-9 against Avon’s Emma Maslen in the two-wood singles.
However, Roberts-Phare’s hopes of emulating Shadwell and collecting a double were wrecked in the four-wood singles final as she lost 22-6 to Devizes player Bev Lilley.
Bassett’s Charlotte Daniell went down 21-16 against Joanna Hicks (Highworth) in the junior final.
Attention now turns to the month-long national championships that commence at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa, this Saturday.
First up for Wiltshire are the ladies side in the semi-finals of the Johns Trophy – the inter-county championship – against Essex.
Day one also sees Dave Snell and his son Michael contest the quarter-finals in the family pairs against Tom and John McGuiness (Bucks).
On Sunday, Charlotte Daniell (RWB) and Jo Hicks (Highworth) set out in the U25 singles and the Devizes duo of Sheila Garlick and Bev Lilley begin their quest for the ladies senior pairs title.
