FIVE clubs from the local area – Holt, Spencer Moulton, Avon, Chippenham Town and Royal Wootton Bassett – are all represented at the men’s county national finals days being staged at Devizes this weekend.
However, two foursomes from Chippenham Town unfortunately clash in the O55s fours final, although the club is at least definitely guaranteed a winner representative at the nationals at Royal Leamington Spa.
The quartet of Kevin Ringham, Martin Clark, Roger Workman and Nobby Tucker, who beat Spencer Melksham (Pete Sanders) 17-12 in the semi-finals, face the rink of Rob Clews, Jim Fitzpatrick, Richard Gainey and Willie Jones, who beat Westlecot 13-12 in their last-four clash.
Royal Wootton Bassett supply three finalists. Chris Cheesley faces Kyle Anderson in the men’s four-wood singles, while Anderson – a national fours winner last season – competes in the triples final on Sunday alongside fellow fours winners Dave Godwin and Steve Snell against Spencer Moulton trio Ashley Kierl, Russell Francis & Graham Shadwell. Francis and Shadwell – pairs champions in 2016 and runners-up the previous season – bid for a second pairs crown together when they play Westlecot’s Paul Kistle and James Richman.
Holt’s Wayne Snook faces Nick Revill (Salisbury) in the two-wood singles final after knocking out Bassett pair Neil Smith and Dave Godwin in the quarter and semi-finals last week.
Avon’s rising young star Tom Newman teams up with Tom Little in the U25 pairs against Westlecot duo Jake Webster and Mike Titcombe.
Newman has also reached the U25 singles final and plays Nathan Richards (Westlecot).
Finally, the Holt foursome of Chris Moore, Chris Poole, Matt Tucker and Tony Keating will have to overcome Westlecot in the delayed fours semi-final before meeting an Amesbury quartet of veterans in the final.
- DAVE Snell and son Michael have reached the quarter-finals in the family pairs competition at the national championships.
The Royal Wootton Bassett duo booked a spot at Leamington with a 24-5 victory at Newbury in the area final against Katy and Dave Atwell (Alton, Hants) last Friday.
