U12

Chippenham's U12s travelled to the Salisbury Festival hoping to improve on their performance of the previous week where they finished runners-up in the Wootton Bassett Festival.

Making a good start in their first game against Sherbourne, Chippenham took an early lead when James intercepted a Sherbourne pass and romped home to score.

A second try from Jim left Chippenham comfortable winners - two tries to nil at the full-time whistle.

However, things did not go well for the Chippenham team in their second game against Bournemouth.

Outplayed by a strong Bournemouth team they found themselves two tries to nil down at half-time.

With a slight improvement in the second half, Chippenham scored two tries from Keiran and Connall but gave two soft tries away to lose four tries to two.

Facing old adversaries, Devizes in game three, Chippenham could not find much flow to their game, and narrowly lost when they conceded one try late in the second half.

With two losses from three games, Chippenham did not advance in the tournament but played two more games in play-offs to decide on lower positions.

Facing New Milton, they went down twelve points to nil by the middle of the first half, but managing a brief spell of good rugby, they replied with a try and a conversion from Oscar.

New Milton did however, add a further try and conversion in the second half and give a final scoreline of nineteen points to seven and take the match.

The final game of the day against SHerbourne ended in an uneventful draw 0-0 and summed up a rather lack lustre and disappointing day for Chippenham's Under 12s.

This first pool match against Bournemouth saw Chippenham make a great start, probing for openings with good handling and rucking.

Their patience was rewarded when Mackenzie burst through to score after a good run by Gaunt.

Chippenham maintained the pressure recycling and moving the ball through successive phases keeping the opposition in their half up to the break.

Their confident play continued through the second half and Waters was rewarded with a try after some good work by Emery.

Chippenham's third try followed after they were awarded a penalty following a high tackle and Emery drove over.

Bournemouth never managed to get out of their half and CHippenham were unlucky not to add to their tally when the forwards put in a massive drive to the line late on.

Chippenham faced Salisbury 2nd in their next game and again made a confident drive to the line from the start.

The ensuing ruck released the ball to Williams who powered through into the corner on the blind side.

Salisbury came back strongly and Chippenham resisted well with good tackling and fine scavenging by the forwards, where Logut and Hurring were outstanding.

The second half had less fluency although Chippenham had the opposition under pressure throughout and were unlucky not to add to the score.

Chippenham U11 15 Basingstoke U11 5

The high standard of Chippenham's play continued in their next match against Basingstoke.

Good foraging by the forwards was rewarded by the backs when Waters touched down.

This was followed by a second try after several phases of play which got Chippenham to the opposition line.

The forwards secured quick ball at a ruck near the opposition line which scrum-ahlf Alcorn seized upon to dive over.

More the same followed in the second half although Chippenham never quite managed to create the space to finish off the moves, until winger WHetton finally jinked through a number of players to score.

The opposition came back well and Chippenham had to resist a period of pressure in the closing stages until Basingstoke's efforts were rewarded with a late try.

These three wins saw Chippenham play the winners of the other two pools for the trophy.

Chippenham U11s 5 Wimborne U11s 0

First up was a strong WImborne side. Chippenham had to soak up some early pressure and did so with solid tackling and courage at the breakdowns.

They also had to withstand the loss of fly-half Mackenzie.

But they battled hard and were awarded a penalty close to the Wimborne line for a high tackle.

Their initial drive for the line was thwarted but Logut recovered the ball to drive through to score.

They again had to withstand some sustained pressure and suffered several injuries before half-time.

WImborne piled on the pressure in the second half but the Chippenham defence held firm.

Gaunt pushed them back with a fine kick and Whetton came close to scoring in the corner as the clock ticked down.

A hard-fought game but CHippenham were the winners.

Chippenham U11s 5 Devizes U11s 0

Chippenham started well again showing tremendous commitment at the rucks and mauls and with the backs switching directions, probing for openings.

But Devizes tackled well and held a confident Chippenham at bay.

The second half was similar, with Chippenham camped in the Devizes half, doing all the attacking.

Waters and Gaunt, who were outstanding, made frequent, strong runs but several good moves fell short of the line.

The deadlock was finally broken when Devizes overthrew at a lineout close to their line and the loose ball was gathered by Waters to dive over.

The rest of the game was spent in the Devizes half.

Chippenham therefore lifted the trophy having won all their games and conceding only one try to the nine they scored.

They kept their focus through the many lengthy breaks between games and frequent stoppages.

In the face of stiff and often very physical opposition, they gave a 100 per cent commitment.

Chippenham A 10 Corsham 0

Having come second to Corsham in last week's Wootton Bassett Festival, this was a must-win game for the A team.

Strong team play gave Dan Carter two opportunities to cross the opposition's line in style.

After a great game against Corsham, this was a disappointing performance from Chippenham A who never really found their groove in either half.

Chippenham A 5 North Dorset 10

Some strong play from Chippenham A in the first half kept North Dorset from scoring but Chippenham did not cross the line either.

The second half saw two tries from North Dorset before Liam Newton powered his way through to score one for Chippenham.

Despite a valiant effort, Chippenham A could not balance the score and so ended their Festival run as Bowl runners-up.
