BOXING: There was double disappointment for Walcot ABC at the Western Counties Junior Novice Championship in Exmouth, where both their young boxers met with defeat.
Sixteen-year-old Owen Gallagher appeared to have landed with enough scoring shots during his contest with Bob Smith of Lympstone ABC to have secured victory, however the Devon judges found in favour of their local boxer by a majority points verdict.
Gerrard McDonagh, 15, was involved in a close and at times untidy first round with Plymouth Pilgrim's Lee Couts, which finished all square at the first bell.
During the second session McDonagh attempted to increase the tempo but walked on to a solid left hook and was counted out.
Coach Dave Holyday was philosophical in defeat, saying: "Both these young boxers will learn a lot from tonight and hopefully will continue to improve.
"I felt Owen did enough to win and he can count himself unlucky he's not progressing to the next round of the competition."
