JORDAN Smith produced a scintillating first round to take an early lead at the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco today.
Wiltshire golfer Smith shot a bogey-free seven-under round of 66 to top the early leaderboard in Rabat.
Spaniard Alejandro Canizares is the 26-year-old’s nearest challenger, one shot back.
Teeing off at the 10th hole in his first round, Derry Hill’s Smith got off to a steady start with a run of four pars in a row.
However, a birdie at his fifth hole exploded things into life. Another followed at the next hole, with a third birdie on his eighth to see Smith reach the turn at three-under.
Back-to-back birdies also arrived at holes 12 and 13 as well as 15 and 16 to make it seven shots claimed in the space of 12 holes.
Although Smith rounded off his round with two pars in succession, his previous heroics were enough to see him report back to the clubhouse at the head of the leaderboard.
