NORTH Wilts men’s hopes of lifting a national indoor title this season are over for another year but the Chippenham-based club in Westcroft still has an interest in two ladies’ events.
The Moore family brothers Steve, Chris and Andy (skip), the Area 16 men’s O50s triples champions, saw their hopes of a first title for North Wilts ended in the last 16 in Nottingham.
They lost in the last 16 14-6 to the Stamford (Lincs) trio of Bob Warters, Cliff Watson and Keith Rippin.
The result was a huge disappointment for Andy Moore as he was a beaten finalist in this event six years ago when representing Christie Miller IBC (Melksham).
North Wilts’ hopes of a success this season in a national indoor championship or age group competition now lie with Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs.
They have previously won the national pairs championship in the 2009/10 season and are now seeking a pairs’ double.
That is not in the championship section but in the ladies age group events in the O60s pairs competition.
They qualified for Nottingham in this event when beating Jeanette Wheeler and Sue Bird (Clarrie) in the Area 16 final 18-14.
In the last 16 at Nottingham, they have been drawn against a pair from York and District IBC.
Jacobs then plays in the O60s ladies singles and starts with a last 16 tie against Pat Bain (Eastbourne).
WILTSHIRE Indoor Bowls Association will be holding their 44th AGM on Tuesday, April 23 at North Wilts Bowls Club (7.30pm).
CLARRIE Dunbar ladies have been bidding to become the first from the club to win a national indoor team title since the club opened its doors in 1985.
The Standerwick-based ladies have enjoyed a fantastic run in the Mason Trophy – women’s O60 double rinks – and reached the semi-finals of the competition with six victories for the first-time ever.
Dunbar face a stiff task as they face holders Lincoln & District in the semi-finals.
The selectors have named the same eight players and two rinks that beat Torquay United in the quarter-finals 46-28.
HEAVYWEIGHTS, Clarrie Dunbar and Plymouth, clash in the final of the Wessex League play-offs for the overall league title this Sunday in Southampton at Atherley IBC.
The two clubs have dominated the Wessex League play-offs since the turn of the century, winning the play-offs and overall title on no fewer than nine occasions between them.
Plymouth took their first Wessex crown in 2001 and added to it two years later.
A back-to-back double followed in 2005 and 2006, and their last success came in 2016.
On the other hand, Clarrie have only won the overall Wessex crown four times. but all of those victories have come in the past 10 years.
They won their first Wessex crown in 2009 and a second in 2013. A third followed in 2015 and a fourth two years ago.
This season, Clarrie are unbeaten in Wessex League, matches winning seven out of seven to top the Central Region.
And in the play-offs, they beat Oxford City & County 85-65 in the last 16 and Welford-on-Avon (Warks) 83-50 in the quarter-finals.
And a fortnight ago at Dolphin (Poole, Dorset) in the semi-finals, Clarrie accounted for Bournemouth 85-62.
