BATH Road won the Westernsport Trophies-sponsored WG Parr Trophy in the Chippenham & District Sunday League following a 2-0 victory over New Inn Wacker in the final in front of a crowd of more than 150 at the Southbank Ground in Corsham.
Road were almost given the perfect start in the opening minute when Matt Spear headed inches over, before goalkeeper Luke Jones produced a fine save to tip an effort from Wacker’s Sean Horobin to safety.
The woodwork then came to Road’s rescue as Luke Whittard’s shot cannoned off the post.
Chances came and went for both teams, with Tom Sigee flashing a couple of shots wide for Road and Horobin going close for New Inn.
Late in the half, an excellent delivery from Road’s Jack Sanderson was scrambled to safety, before Sigee shot into the hands of Wacker goalkeeper Marc Pearce.
New Inn started the second half the better and Owen Gardiner missed the chance to break the deadlock, before a superb last-ditch challenge from Tom Flynn denied Horobin from close range.
On the hour mark, Road produced the move of the match as the ball arrived at the feet of Sanderson, whose strike was well saved by Pearce.
Sigee headed over on 80 minutes, but less than a minute later, his shot was adjudged to been handled in the area, and Sigee held his nerve to smash home the resulting penalty to break the deadlock.
Sigee then conjured up something special, picking the ball up before unleashing a stunning 25-yard drive to double Road’s lead.
New Inn never gave up and only a superb save from keeper Jones denied Horobin, but the final whistle sounded soon afterwards, and Road captain Flynn collected the silverware from Ken Clarke, representing sponsors Westernsport Trophies.
Subsidiary Cup
SPORTING Box claimed the last remaining semi-final spot in the Gooding Accounts-sponsored Subsidiary Cup after they defeated Old Road 3-2 to seal top spot in Group Three.
Morgan Summerfield netted twice and James Weymouth added the other for Box, who now meet holders Bromham for a place in the final. Matt Poole and Jack Fraser replied for Road.
Premier Division
FC NORTH Wiltshire signed of their campaign with a 4-3 defeat away at Box Rovers, whose victory sees them finish in third spot.
Leading 3-1 at the break through an Adam Mitchell brace and Zac Hillier’s effort, Rovers added their fourth when Mitchell rounded off his hat-trick. Rich Tandy and Cameron Lee (2) replied for North Wilts.
Champions Pheasant were in partying mood away at Westbury Rangers and celebrated lifting the trophy last weekend with a 14-0 win over their hosts, who played much of the game with only seven players.
Nathan Phillimore (2), Alex Pring, Nick Manifold, Dave Nolan, Rob Pock, Mark Nolan, Craig Dore, Ryan Tryrell, Paul Gittins, Rich Hudson, Garry Lock and a couple of own goals made up the 14.
AFC Melksham hosted runners-up FC Lacock needing a win to maintain their top-four aspirations, and they claimed a 1-0 triumph thanks to a Lewis Epplestone goal.
Division One
FADED missed out on the chance to overtake second-placed Westbury Railway after they were held to a 2-2 draw away at The Foresters Arms, who came from 2-0 down to claim their point.
Ashley Pomes finished off a fine Faded move to put them 1-0 up and Zack Manna’s 20-yard volley made it 2-0 before Sean Meer halved the deficit just before half-time. Dan Neale restored parity for the Foresters, who should have nicked the win had Meer not missed a sitter.
Hat-trick hero Josh Madle was the star of the show for Brunel in their 4-3 victory over Fox & Hounds.
Madle doubled up in the first half, and along with a Josh Legg effort, gave Brunel a 3-0 advantage. Fox & Hounds were excellent in the second half as Justin Preece’s penalty, Myles Woodward and Jayson Stokes got them back on level terms, only for Madle to complete his treble and earn Brunel the win.
Division Two
WORTON & Cheverell are the new leaders after a 10-0 win over White Hart saw them replace Lion & Fiddle at the summit.
With one game remaining for each team, the title is likely to be decided on goal difference, and as things stand, Worton have a six-goal advantage over Lion.
Ben House got four of the goals against White Hart, there were two apiece for Ali Bradley and Wayne House, with a Pete Huntley effort and an own goal giving Worton the big win.
