WILTSHIRE-BASED apprentice jockey Tom Marquand has been named the Stobart Flat Jockey of the Month for September.
The 17-year-old, who currently leads the race to be crowned the Stobart Champion Apprentice on QIPCO British Champions Day, saw off competition from his more experienced rivals Jamie Spencer, Andrea Atzeni and Paul Hanagan, who all had impressive months.
A treble at Chepstow as well as a double at both Sandown and Bath were the highlights of the month for Marquand, who was selected as the winner of the shortlist by a panel of industry experts.
Marquand, based with trainer Richard Hannon at his Herridge stables near Marlborough, said: “It’s been a whirlwind year and the last few months in particular have been brilliant for me.
“To even be nominated against the likes of Jamie, Paul and Andrea is an honour, so to win is fantastic.
“I only joined Richard Hannon’s yard in September last year but I’m learning loads every single day and Mr Hannon has been a massive help to me.
“I’d also like to thank my agent – it’s testament to his hard work that I’ve got so many rides.
“It would be great to win the Stobart Champion Apprentice title because that means I’ll have continued to ride winners. I’m two away from 50 now so that is my next big target.”
