Calne Town boss Simon Gardner  hopes his side have finally gotten the monkey off their back after notched up their first win of the season.

The Lilywhites failed to take all three points in any of their opening six outings. But on Saturday they came from behind to beat Wells City 2-1.

Gardner said the Lily-
whites’ agony could have come to an end much sooner than last Saturday.

“We rode our luck a bit in the Cribbs game (a 0-0 draw on August 13) and we didn’t play well against Oldland Abbotonians (a 4-2 defeat on August 20) but apart from that, we’ve been playing well,” he said.

“We haven’t been getting what we deserved. Against Wincanton and Radstock, I thought we were going to do the job, only for it to get taken away from us right at the end.

“It’s been a frustrating start to the season but I said to the players after the game on Saturday that hopefully that’s the monkey off our back and we can build on it and get our season started properly.

“We started quite well but then the referee decided to make the inexplicable decision to give Wells a penalty – we thought it was a foul on our player.

“But we made a few changes at half-time and managed to get the win with two goals.”

Visitors Wells controversially took the lead after they converted a spot kick late in the first half, despite the penalised Craig Kent appearing to be the player fouled as he challenged a City attacker.

But Darrin Moss tucked home the equaliser from Glenn Armstrong’s knockdown before Aaron Hopkins fired in the winner.
