PEWSEY Vale boss Nick Maggs was disappointed to see his side pay for a slow start against Sherborne Town in the FA Cup last weekend.

Vale were eliminated from the country’s most famous cup competition at the hands of Toolstation League Premier Division outfit Sherborne Town, who saw off Maggs’ men courtesy of an early strike from Haydn Hodges.

The Pewsey manager reckons that his team were more than deserving of an equaliser in the second period at Ball Road but was left to reflect on an opportunity missed.

“It’s been a bit of a recurring theme for us – in most of our pre-season friendlies, we’ve started slowly,” said Maggs.

“They kicked off at 3pm and in our heads, we didn’t kick off until about ten minutes after that. We were always going to get punished against a better side.

“But in the second half, we battered them and I can’t complain about the way that we performed against step five opposition, who were from a level higher than us.

“It’s just disappointing that we’ve not managed to get back into the game and it’s all down to the way that we started it.”

Vale make the trip to the Isle of Wight this weekend to take on Cowes Sports in the Sydenhams League Division One.
