JOINT-BOSS Justin Webster saw Devizes Town fill their boots at Welton Rovers on Tuesday night and thinks that his side’s victory showed off their strength in depth.

Devizes were missing a clutch of players but romped to a 5-2 win in Somerset, with Tom Price’s penalty and Robbie Mitchell’s strike putting them 2-1 up at the break.

A deflected free-kick and stunning long-range effort saw Mitchell complete his hat-trick whilst Gareth James also found the net with a header.

“We had a few people missing on Tuesday but we’ve got a good squad of about 20 players – I think it showed the kind of strength in depth that we’ve got,” said Webster.

“We played really well and I don’t think that we scored five away from home very often last season.

“We know that August is going to be really tough with the amount of games that we’re going to have. We’re playing on Saturday (against Ashton & Backwell United) and Tuesday (Almondsbury UWE) and the first thing we’ll be looking to do is try and address our home form.”

Devizes’ season-opener ended in a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Chard Town last Saturday.

Ben Haines’ goal was enough to see off Webster and Darran Walters’ men, with striker Mark Barnes missing from the penalty spot.

Devizes’ Antony Hogg was also sidelined with a painful head injury.

“Our midfielder took an elbow to the head and had to have 14 stitches – it was just one of those days,” said Webster.

“It was a bitty, stop-start game and we just huffed and puffed all afternoon.”
