PAUL Braithwaite’s Wootton Bassett Town recovered from their disastrous opening day defeat at Binfield with all three points away to Newbury on Tuesday evening.
Bassett slipped to a dismal 6-1 defeat in Berkshire on the opening day of the new Hellenic League Premier Division season on Saturday, with Nathan Gambling firing home the visitors’ consolation goal from the penalty spot midway through the second period.
But on Tuesday, new boss Braithwaite saw his side bounce back, thanks in no small part to the heroics of goalkeeper Ben Mitchell.
Stopper Mitchell was in imperious form as he pulled off a string of second-half saves, including one from the penalty spot.
Gambling capitalised on a mistake in the Newbury defence to net his second goal of the season, clinching Bassett’s win.
