Last week’s Memory Lane sparked an e-mail from Ken Jenks who, with his wife, had been chatting with friends Gloria Chapman (nee Neate) and her husband Tony.

They filled in more detail about some of the teachers in the photograph, which is reproduced this week.

Back row, left to right, are art teacher Bill Scruton; Mr Lund who acted as headmaster during the war while the former head Mr E Stanley Roberts was serving in the Armed forces.

HF Halliwell headmaster, Mr Prosser, “Four Wheel Brake” F W Burt who taught woodwork, metalwork and maths and had a distinctive Canadian accent.

Mr E Howells (Eggo) taught Latin and music and led the choir. Miss Darlyrimple, whose father was a former bandmaster of the Wilts regimental band, also taught music.

Front row Mr Clook, English teacher Miss Guy (Milly) whose family ran a flower shop at 30 Market Place; secretary Miss Chivers whose family H & G Chivers had a painting and plumbing business; Mrs Jarvis headmistress; Miss Janaway; “Tommy” Mr Watkins, a good rugby player who later married Miss Tidy a domestic science teacher; Mrs Jones and Mr Lewis who taught maths.

Also mentioned was Miss Rosella Jane Hawks who looked like Marylin Monroe was of French origin and taught French while doing her bit for Anglo American relations by often going home in a jeep, cook Mrs Maslen and caretaker Mr Nichols.
