Sheldon Thomas is accused of robbery and causing grievous bodily harm with intent in relation with the alleged incident on Saturday October 13.
No charges were put to the 26-year-old, of Holbein Square, Grange Park, during the brief hearing and he did not enter any pleas.
He is accused of taking Mr Stevens' mobile phone, wallet, cash and credit cards to the value of £200 during the incident.
Thomas was remanded in custody by the judge and the case was adjourned to Friday December 21 when he is due to enter his pleas to the charges.
Mr Stevens, 51, was making his way home after the Windmill pub where he had watched England beat France in the semi-final of the Rugby world cup.
He was savagely beaten and left in a pool of blood after being attacked in Worsley Road in the night time incident.
Mr Stevens suffered a fractured cheek and skull which required 50 stitches and had to undergo brain surgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford to remove a blood clot.
