Volunteer Jane O'Driscoll, who talks to an 85-year-old woman every day to check she is all right, will appear on the Paul O'Grady show today.

Mrs O'Driscoll works as an office manager at Zurich and phones Betty, who is in Gloucester, from her desk every day at 9.30am.

She has been a Call In Time volunteer for two years - which is a scheme run by Zurich and Help The Aged.

Betty, who lives on her own and is housebound is a diabetic and has to rely on an oxygen tank.

Mrs O'Driscoll says what makes her appearance on the Paul O'Grady show so special is that Betty is a big fan.

The 44-year-old, from Abbey Meads, said talking to Betty has changed her life.

"Betty is 85 and has so many stories," said Mrs O'Driscoll.

"I love talking to her every day.

She has really made a difference to my life.

"I have found a new friend now with a capital F. I know I make a difference in her life."

She phones Betty to make sure she has had breakfast and taken her tablets.

During the floods, she contacted Help The Aged to get a delivery of water for Betty.

She said although Betty has off days when she needs support, the pair also share many jokes.

"Often she tells me she has been clubbing during the weekend," said Mrs O'Driscoll. "We have a laugh."

Jane is nervous about meeting Paul O'Grady.

"I am so proud I can go on the show and talk about Betty," she said.

"But I am also nervous. The ironic thing is Betty adores him. She even sent him a card when he wasn't well."
